El corsario al servicio de Inglaterra Sir Francis Drake atacó por sorpresa el puerto de Cádiz en la primavera de 1587 con una flota de 27 navíos, fallando en su objetivo principal de la toma y saqueo de la ciudad. Logró incendiar o hundir 22 navíos, algunos de la Armada pero en su mayoría propiedad de comerciantes, y hacerse con una importante cantidad de municiones y víveres.

Sir Francis Drake, the privateer in the service of England, attacked by surprise the port of Cadiz in the spring of 1587 with a fleet of 27 ships, failling in his main objective of taking and plundering the city. He maneged to burn or sink 22 ships, some belonging to the Navy although most were merchant vessels, and seized a significant amount of ammunition and supplies.

La toma y saqueo de Cádiz por la flota anglo-holandesa en 1596
Una flota anglo-holandesa con tropas al mando del Conde de Essex, logró desembarcar en la ciudad el 30 de junio de 1596. La flota española, que se había retirado a la Bahía, resultó destruida. Las tropas invasoras apresaron e incendiaron la ciudad, tomando rehenes entre sus personalidades, que fueron llevados a Londres. Robert Dudley, cartógrafo y constructor naval (ver ESPACIO DOS) mandaba uno de los buques. También viajaba en la expedición John Donne, que llegó a ser el principal poeta inglés de su tiempo. Y William Slyngisbie, “ gentleman adventurer”, autor de una crónica del viaje.
Felipe II tomo la decisión de fortificar la ciudad a raíz de este desastre, encargando el proyecto al arquitecto-ingeniero Cristóbal de Rojas, de forma que Cádiz no pudiera ser invadida de nuevo.
The capture and sacking of Cádiz by the Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1596
An Anglo-Dutch fleet with troops under the command of the Earl of Essex, succeeded in landing in the city on 30 June 1596. The Spanish fleet, which had retreated to the Bay, was destroyed. The invading troops seized and set fire to the city, taking as hostages well-known public figures, who were then transported to London. Robert Dudley, cartographer and shipbuilder (see SPACE TWO) commanded one of the ships. Also on the expedition was John Donne, who later became the leading English poet of his time, as well as William Slyngisbie, "gentleman adventurer" and author of a chronicle of the journey.
Philip II of Spain decided to fortify the city in the wake of this disaster, entrusting the project to the architect-engineer Cristóbal de Rojas, so that Cádiz could not be invaded again.

El mapa está tomado del Relato del viaje a Cádiz, de William Slyngisbie, 1596, que la Miscelánea Naval reprodujo posteriormente, en 1902. Puede verse en Internet Archive.
Recientemente se ha publicado El ataque a Cádiz de 1596 visto por un hidalgo inglés, José Luis Martínez-Dueñas y Fernando Olmedo Granados, Editorial Universidad de Cádiz, 2018.

The Italian Baptista Boazio (1585-1606), "court cartographer" in the service of the Earl of Essex, drew with great fidelity this historical map, of exceptional interest, of the capture of Cádiz.
The map is taken from Relation of the Voyage to Cadiz by Sir William Slyngisbie, 1596, later reproduced, in 1902, in The Naval Miscellany. This can be seen in Internet Archive.
It has recently been published El ataque a Cádiz de 1596 visto por un hidalgo inglés (The attack on Cádiz of 1596 as seen by an English gentleman) by José Luis Martínez-Dueñas and Fernando Olmedo Granados, Editorial Universidad de Cádiz, 2018.

Thomas Cockson y Thomas de Leu
Robert Devereux (1566-1601) entró en la corte de la reina Isabel I de la mano de su padrastro el conde de Leicester. La reina lo convirtió en su favorito y le hizo miembro de su Consejo Real. Aunque volvió como héroe de la conquista de Cádiz, sus ulteriores fracasos militares le hicieron perder el favor de la reina. Finalmente fue decapitado a los 34 años de edad, acusado de traición a raíz de un golpe fallido contra la reina y su gobierno.
Thomas Cockson fue uno de los primeros grabadores ingleses, especialmente de retratos. El mapa de Cádiz del fondo está copiado de un fragmento del de Boazio.

Robert Devereux (1566-1601) was introduced into the court of Queen Elizabeth I by his stepfather the Earl of Leicester. He soon became the favorite of the queen made him and member of her Royal Council. Although he returned as a hero from the conquest of Cádiz, his subsequent military failures caused him to lose favor with the queen. He was in the end beheaded at 34 years of age, accused of treason after his failed coup against the queen and her government.
Thomas Cockson was one of the earliest English engravers, mainly of portraits. The Cadiz map in the background is copied from a fragment of Boazio's map.

Retratos del Conde de Nottingham, Almirante de la flota en la expedición a Cádiz y de Sir Walter Raleigh, que mandaba una escuadra, llevan también un mapa de Cádiz al fondo. Los dos grabados, así como el de Essex, están en el Museo Británico.
El grabado de Nottingham es también de Thomas Cockson, y el de Raleigh lo realizó el grabador francés de origen flamenco Thomas de Leu.
Portraits of the Earl of Nottingham, Admiral of the fleet on the Cádiz expedition, and Sir Walter Raleigh, who commanded a squadron, also bear a map of Cádiz in the background. Both prints, as the one of Essex, are in the British Museum.
The Nottingham engraving is also by Thomas Cockson, and the Raleigh’s was made by the Flemish-born French engraver Thomas de Leu.

The engraving belongs to his interesting Album with Historical Engravings by van Hogenberg, 1550 - 1631.

La flota inglesa, con 10.000 hombres a bordo, entró en la bahía de Cádiz el 1 de noviembre de 1625 y logró la rendición del Fuerte del Puntal. Desembarcaron los efectivos, pero desmoralizados y hostigados por las fuerzas españolas, abandonaron el campo de batalla dejando sobre él 2.000 hombres entre muertos y ahogados.
Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) fue un pintor del Siglo de Oro español, dedicado a la pintura religiosa. Fue amigo de Velázquez, pero su estilo es menos realista y más místico.

The English fleet, with 10,000 men on board, entered the Bay of Cadiz on 1 November 1625 and brought about the surrender of El Puntal Fort. The troops disembarked but, demoralised and harassed by the Spanish forces, abandoned the battlefield, leaving 2,000 men dead or drowned.
Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish Golden Age painter, dedicated to religious painting. He was friends with Velázquez, but his style is less realistic and more mystical.

This etching depict the funeral of Admiral Berend Jacobsen Karpfanger, commander of the German vessel Wappen Von Hamburg. The admiral perished when the ship was set fire to and sank in the waters of the Bay of Cádiz on 10 October 1683.

A fleet with Anglo-Dutch troops besieged Cadiz for a month in August-September 1702, but was repelled by the city's defences. The same fleet managed later to defeat a Franco-Spanish squadron in the Battle of Rande in the ría of Vigo.

The map belongs to the Collection of Plans of Fortifications and Battles by Anna Beek & Gaspar de Baillieu,1684-1709, of the Library of Congress of the United States, which contains plans of battles of the War of the Spanish Succession: Cádiz, Vigo, Barcelona and Gibraltar.

La composición de nueve grabados pertenece a su publicación, sobre la Guerra de Sucesión Española, Theatrum Bellicum incipiens a Carolo II y describe siete batallas del año 1702: Cádiz, Vigo (3 vistas), Keiserswert (Alemania), Venlo, Stevensweert, Roermond (Países Bajos) y Luzzara (Italia).

Petrus Schenk (1660-1718) was a German engraver and cartographer whose sons continued his business in Amsterdam and Leipzig after his death. The composition of nine engravings belongs to his publication about the Spanish Succesion War Theatrum Bellicum incipiens a Carolo II, and depicts seven battles from 1702: Cádiz, Vigo (3 views), Keiserswert (Germany), Venlo, Stevensweert, Roermond (Netherlands) and Luzzara (Italy).
The map of the Battle of Cádiz in the upper left corner is very similar to Anna Beek and Jan van Call's map on the same subject, in fact Petrus Schenk engraved other drawings of the latter.

Curiosas Ciudades y Teatro de varios sucesos de Guerra en España
Gabriel Bodenehr I (1664-1758) o (1673-1765) según otros biógrafos, fue un cartógrafo alemán, grabador y editor, nacido en Ausburgo. Se hizo cargo de la casa editorial de Johann Stridbeck, y siguió utilizando sus grabados. Su hijo, Gabriel Bodenehr II (1705-1792), continuó su obra.
Los mapas aquí incluidos pertenecen a la publicación que titula esta sección. En el tercero de ellos se representa la batalla de Málaga, del 24 de agosto de 1704, entre la flota hispano francesa y la anglo-holandesa, en el ámbito de la guerra de Sucesión.

Curious Cities and Scenes of several battles in Spain
Born in Ausburg, Gabriel Bodenehr I (1664-1758) or (1673-1765) according to other biographers, was a German cartographer, engraver and publisher. He took over Johann Stridbeck’s publishing house, using his engravings. His son, Gabriel Bodenehr II (1705-1792), continued his work.
The maps included here belong to the publication that heads up this section. The third one represents the battle of Málaga on 24 August 1704, between the Franco-Spanish and the Anglo-Dutch fleets, in the War of the Spanish Succession.

La armada inglesa estableció un bloqueo de Cádiz en 1797. El contraalmirante Horacio Nelson atacó la ciudad en julio de ese año, con la pretensión de desalojar de la bahía la flota española mandada por el almirante Mazarredo. Este le obligó a retirarse, pero el bloqueo se prolongó hasta 1802.

The English navy established a blockade of Cádiz in 1797. Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson attacked the city in July of that year, with the intention of dislodging from the bay the Spanish fleet commanded by Admiral Mazarredo . This forced Nelson to withdraw, although the blockade lasted until 1802.
Thomas Buttersworth (1768-1842), was a British painter of naval scenes.
