Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), geógrafo y cartógrafo, nació en Augsburgo. Gerard Mercator y él son los fundadores de la cartografía flamenca. Ortelius fue nombrado Geógrafo del rey Felipe II.
The Globe Theatre
The geographer and cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), was born in Augsburg. He and Gerard Mercator are the founders of Flemish cartography. Ortelius was appointed Geographer of Philip II of Spain.

El Theatrum de Ortelius fue el primer atlas moderno propiamente dicho, aunque la palabra Atlas no fue introducida hasta 1595 por Gerard Mercator.
Apareció en 1570, fue editado sucesivamente en varias lenguas durante la vida de Ortelius, y posteriormente por la familia de cartógrafos Blaeu. Llegó a contener 228 láminas, fue un gran éxito editorial y el libro más caro de su época.
Ortelius’s Theatrum is, strictly speaking, the first modern atlas, although the word Atlas was actually not introduced until 1595 by Gerard Mercator.
It came out in 1570, was published successively in various languages during Ortelius’s life, and afterwords by the Blaeu cartographer’s family. In the end it contained 228 plates, and was a great success and the most expensive book of its time.

The page Carpetania - Guipúzcoa - Cádiz appeared for the first time in the 1584 edition, also in Latin. It was drawn by Joris Hoefnagel, main draftsman of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum (see SPACE SEVEN), complementary Atlas of the Theatrum.
A copy is kept in the Hispanic Digital Library. The images included here correspond, respectively, to pages 4, 15, 47 and 51.

Two Epitoms of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Philips Galle
Several Epitomes appeared, in small format, shortly after the publication of Ortelius's Theatrum.
An Epitome was published in Antwerp in 1577 by Peeter Heyns, a friend of Abraham Ortelius, with maps engraved by Philips Galle. Other editions were published in several languages. Philips Galle (1537-1612) was a very important copper engraver and printer who worked in Utrecht and Antwerp.

Poco después de la publicación del Theatrum de Ortelius aparecieron varios Epítomes, en pequeño formato.
Peeter Heyns, amigo de Abraham Ortelius, publicó en 1577 en Amberes un Epítome con mapas grabados por Philips Galle, del que se hicieron ediciones en varios idiomas. Philips Galle (1537-1612) fue un muy importante grabador en cobre e impresor que trabajó en Utrech y en Amberes.

Espejo del Mundo
Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) publicó su Speculum Orbis Terrarum en 1578, en competencia con el Theatrum Orbis Terrarum de Ortelius, publicado con ocho años de ventaja. Su hijo Cornelis amplió la obra, publicando Speculum Orbis Terrae en 1593. Sus mapas son de mayor calidad que las del Theatrum, sin embargo el atlas tuvo escaso éxito. No se reeditó y se conservan pocos ejemplares, éste en la Biblioteca del Museo Nacional de Varsovia.
Mirrror of the World
Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) published his Speculum Orbis Terrarum in 1578, competing with Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which had been published eight years earlier. His son Cornelis expanded on the work, publishing Speculum Orbis Terrae in 1593. Its maps are of higher quality than those in the Theatrum, yet the atlas was not very successful. It did not have subsequent editions and very few copies survived. The one below is in the Library of the National Museum in Warsaw.

Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) fue el primer cartógrafo dedicado a la producción de mapas comerciales. Publicó un atlas mundial en 1585, que sería el primero en obtener el nombre de Atlas. Se hizo popular, y tuvo muchas ediciones. Esta es la edición del atlas de Mercator publicado en Amsterdam en 1606 por Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612). Incluye 37 nuevos mapas, siete de ellos sobre la Península Ibérica.
Atlas or Cosmographical Meditations
Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was the first cartographer dedicated to the commercial map production. He published a world atlas in 1585, which would be the first to obtain the name Atlas. It became a popular one which was to have many editions. This is the edition of the Mercator atlas published in Amsterdam in 1606 by Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612). It includes 37 new maps, seven of them about the Iberian Penninsula.

Pedro Texeira nació en Lisboa en fecha imprecisa, y murió en Madrid en 1662. Fue Cosmógrafo del rey Felipe IV de España, y por encargo de este elaboró un Atlas que se ocupa de los puertos más importantes de España y Portugal, de Fuenterrabía a Rosas.
El Atlas se había considerado perdido, hasta que se descubrió en el año 2002 en Viena, en la Biblioteca Nacional de Austria, de cual se han tomado las imágenes aquí utilizadas.
Description of Spain and of the Coasts and Ports of its Kingdoms

Pedro Texeira was born in Lisbon on an unknown date, and died in Madrid in 1662. The Cosmographer of Philip IV of Spain, he was commissioned to create an Atlas of the most important ports of Spain and Portugal, from Fuenterrabía to Rosas.
The Atlas, from which the images here have been taken, was considered lost until it was unearthed in the Austrian National Library in Vienna in 2002.

Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) trabajó inicialmente como hidrógrafo de la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Orientales. Fue miembro electo del Consejo de Ámsterdam.
A partir del Atlas Novus de su padre, Willem Janszoon, elaboró y publicó su obra maestra, el Atlas Maior, entre los años 1662 y 1672, compuesto de once volúmenes y cerca de 600 mapas, en varios idiomas.
Del tomo que contiene las cartas y descripciones de España, de 1672, hay un ejemplar en la Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, al que pertenecen las imágenes, que se corresponden respectivamente con las hojas 4, 102 y 107. Del mapa de Andalucía hay dos versiones más, las tres casi idénticas: la correspondiente al atlas de Willem Janszoon Blaeu y Joan Blaeu, y la del atlas de Johannes Janssonius.
Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) initially worked as a hydrographer for the Dutch East India Company and went on to become an elected member of the Amsterdam Council.
He created and published his masterpiece, the Atlas Maior, between1662 and 1672, based on his father Willem Janszoon’s Atlas Novus. It is composed of eleven volumes and about 600 maps, and was published in various languages.
The images below correspond respectively to pages 4, 102 and 107 of the1672 edition of the volume containing the letters and descriptions of Spain, housed in the Hispanic Digital Library. There are two more versions of the map of Andalusia, all three almost identical: the one corresponding to the atlas by Willem Janszoon Blaeu and Joan Blaeu, and the one to the atlas by Johannes Janssonius.

Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French military engineer and cartographer. He published Les Travaux de Mars, ou l'art de la guerre, a widely distributed treatise on polyorcetics, Description de L'Univers, and a treatise on geometry. Before working for Louis XIV of France, he had worked for the King Alfonso VI of Portugal.

Charles Pène was a French cartographer in the service of Louis XIV of France. He published an Atlas of the Balearic Islands in 1680.
Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer, obtained in Paris the privilege of publishing for French publishers from Amsterdam. He published the French Neptune, see SPACE TWO.

Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771) fue Geógrafo del rey Luis XV de Francia desde los 25 años de edad. Sus obras principales son sobre campañas militares y tiene también un Atlas en 14 volúmenes.
Su hijo Jean-Baptiste Jacques de Beaurain continuó su obra.

Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771) was, from the age of 25 years, the geographer of Louis XV. Although his main works are on military campaigns, he also published an Atlas in 14 volumes.
His son Jean-Baptiste Jacques de Beaurain continued his work.

Tomás López de Vargas Machuca (1730-1802), después de formarse en París fue nombrado director del nuevo Gabinete de Geografía creado por el rey Carlos III. Fue Académico de San Fernando y de la Historia.
El Atlas Geográfico de España es su principal obra, encargo de Manuel Godoy en 1795. Fue publicado por sus hijos tras su fallecimiento.

Tomás López de Vargas Machuca (1730-1802) was trained as a cartographer in Paris and later appointed director of the new Geography Cabinet created by Charles III of Spain. He was a member of the San Fernando and History Academies.
His main work was the Geographical Atlas of Spain, commissioned by Manuel Godoy in 1795. If was published posthumously by his children after his death.
